While the author of this quote and I are obviously on different sides of the political spectrum......
......I say amen to her basic premise:
You don't have to signal a social conscience by looking like a frump. Lace knickers won't hasten the holocaust, you can ban the bomb in a feather boa just as well as without, and a mild interest in the length of hemlines doesn't necessarily disqualify you from reading Das Kapital and agreeing with every word.

That makes me feel so much better...what with my painted toes - in the interest of looking zippy while wearing sandals at work - and the fab magenta buttons that I used to breathe new life (a veritable third life!) into a sweater that I bought at the Salvation Army about ten years ago. :)

I'm all about the painted toes! I'm a total convert. I went and had mine redone (not a whole new pedicure, alas, just a color change). Best $7 I spent last week. It just makes me *feel* a little spumkier. Especially since a man in the grocery checkout line looked at me and said, "Nice feet!"
