Watched Lost in Translation....

....starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johanson last night on DVD.

Wanted to like it more than I actually did. It is a great study on being lonely amidst millions of folks when you're in a alien culture. And on the complexities of marriage, both early and late.

Refreshing that the two stars were friends--didn't sleep together. That's a rarity in today's movies.

But still.......

Micki will probably like it more than I. I am still the philistine that expects there to be something happening in the movies. Otherwise I'd just read the book.

You are correct, m'am. I really enjoy a character driven movie -- when it's done well. The only problem is that they are few and far between because they are so difficult to pull off; and, even the ones that are "successful" in their genre typically do poorly at the box office. i can't wait to see it.

I watched part of "Lost in Translation" with my hyper evangelical friend Mike. We had to leave early. He was very uncomfortable with the vulgarity. I would have liked to seen it through, but you know how things go.

His review: "It's Demonic".

What do you say to that?

I would certainly say that parts of the culture pictured could be considered "demonic." The institutional acceptance of pornography--even on buses, etc, and the scene in the strip club (which was extremely graphic, and would have been embarrassing to me if I had not been watching it at home) was part of the alienation that these people felt being in this "other" culture.

In a way, it can be seen as a riff on what many of us "traditional values" folk feel in what is becoming an increasingly alien culture here at home.

Does that make sense?

Took the wife to see the movie. I translated the Japanese for her which seemed to make it a might funnier for her. Even without knowing the Japanese I thought it was a well put together film that really made me care about the characters in a way most films of this genre don't.
